Pigmentation can result from various factors, with the most common ones including: Sun exposure or tanning beds lead to issues like sun spots, age spots, freckles, liver spots, or an uneven skin tone. These tend to become more noticeable after age 40 when the skin’s regenerative capabilities decline due to accumulated sun damage. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy cause melasma (often referred to as ‘pregnancy mask’). Menopause and other hormonal conditions can also trigger pigmentation concerns. Post-inflammatory pigmentation or redness can develop as a result of acne. Birthmarks are pigmentation conditions present from birth. Around the age of 40, the skin’s diminished regenerative capacity can lead to the emergence of pigmentation issues, such as age spots, sun spots, and enlarged freckles.
