Cysts
Skin cysts are small, round lumps that form just beneath the skin’s surface. They’re essentially sacs filled with fluid, pus or other material, and feel like smooth, moveable bumps under your skin. The most common type is an epidermoid cyst, which contains a thick substance made of dead skin cells and keratin – that’s the protein in your hair and nails. Cysts tend to develop when skin cells move inwards and start to multiply rather than shedding normally, but they can also form when a hair follicle or skin gland becomes blocked. They’re usually harmless but can become inflamed, infected or simply irritating if they’re large, and many people feel self-conscious when they are in a visible area, especially the face.
How does laser help with Cysts?
Normally, a surgeon makes a small cut to drain the cyst and remove the sac wall to prevent it growing back. However, lasers can play a role in some situations. For example, lasers can make small openings to drain the cyst with minimal scarring. This is particularly useful for facial cysts, where cosmetic results matter the most. Lasers can also be used to destroy cyst walls after drainage, which can often prevent recurrence. Also, after surgical removal, lasers can treat any remaining scars to improve their appearance.
We would strongly recommend that you seek medical advice from your GP or skin specialist as your first port of call, however. Cysts that are not completely removed do have a habit of coming back. If laser treatment is recommended, please get in touch so we can book you in for a consultation.
