PMOS formally known as PCOS

PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS, is a condition found in women of reproductive age and is a hormonal disorder centred around the ovaries. The name was officially changed in May 2026 following a global consensus published in The Lancet, reflecting a broader and more accurate understanding of the condition. However, it remains a widely misunderstood condition, even within the medical establishment. Research is ongoing to find out the causes and possible treatments, but we are still at early stages, so there is still much to learn. It is thought that genetics play a part in increasing the likelihood of a person having the condition, but diet and environmental factors might also play their parts.

How can laser hair removal help with PMOS?

There are several important symptoms of PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), which help with diagnosis. One of the first giveaways is irregular or heavy periods, or periods being missed completely. Women with PMOS might also find it difficult or impossible to conceive, and it is quite common for patients to experience thinning of hair on the head. The condition can also lead to hormonal imbalances, most notably excessive androgen production, which can lead to more hair growth. It is common for women with PMOS to get oily skin and acne, which may or may not be related to each other.

We cannot treat PMOS at LaserHQ, but it's possible that we can treat some of the visible symptoms. Laser hair removal is bread and butter for our clinicians, so we can help you to keep a lid on the excessive growth, which will be either permanent or cause a vast reduction. We might also be able to help you with acne, too, as our laser treatment can lessen some of the effects. However, we would recommend specialist dermatological treatment first.

We recommend that most people will need an average of 8-12 treatments every 4/10 weeks (area depending) to kill the hair follicles beneath the skin and prevent future growth. Some people will require more sessions if any future hormonal changes result in new growth. Yearly top ups may also be required 1/2 sessions, to keep any stray hairs at bay. The laser can only treat hairs that are in the growing phase or visible on the skin surface, as a result, multiple treatments are required to treat all hair in the skin.
At your consultation, we will always ask if you are taking any medication. If so, we would always advise that you check with your GP first, if you are safe for the treatment. Some medications can cause light sensitive reactions, for which this treatment would be unsuitable.
You can leave 4/8 weeks between sessions, depending on the area and how many treatments you have had. Our therapists will create a personal treatment plan for you at your consultation, prior to any treatments.
