Stretch Marks and Laser Surgery

Stretch marks (known medically as striae) happen when the skin stretches rapidly, causing the underlying collagen and elastin fibres to tear. It’s very common for this to happen during pregnancy, but it can also happen during growth spurts, weight changes or muscle building. Stretch marks tend to show as streaks on the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts or arms. At first, they usually appear red, purple or dark brown, but they often fade to pale lines over time.

Many people feel self-conscious about stretch marks, particularly if they’re large, or are in visible areas. It’s worth knowing that they’re incredibly common – most people have them somewhere – but most people would probably prefer them not to be there. It’s also important to know that they are harmless, and are a natural part of your skin’s healing process.

How does Laser help with stretch marks?

At LaserHQ, we use targeted laser treatment to change the texture, colour and overall appearance of stretch marks towards a more natural tone. The laser delivers controlled energy beneath the skin’s surface, encouraging your body’s natural response to rebuild damaged tissue and promote healthier skin structure. This can help fade discolouration, smooth out texture differences, and make stretch marks blend in more naturally with surrounding skin.

Treatment can work on both newer, pigmented stretch marks and older, pale ones, although newer marks often respond more quickly. You’ll typically need multiple sessions, with gradual improvements appearing as your skin regenerates over several weeks.

What does the process involve?

First, we’ll invite you in for a consultation, where we’ll assess your stretch marks’ age, colour and location to work out the best treatment plan. While laser therapy can significantly improve their appearance, stretch marks generally can’t be completely erased. We’ll make sure you have realistic expectations, and we’ll show you examples of past treatments. Then you can make an informed, no-pressure decision on whether to proceed.
