Ingrown Hair and Laser Treatment

As the name suggests, ingrown hairs happen when a hair curls back and grows into the skin instead of growing out of it. It can cause red, inflamed bumps that can be painful and itchy, and can sometimes get infected. They commonly appear after shaving, waxing or plucking, particularly in areas like the bikini line, legs, underarms, face and neck. People with coarse or curly hair are especially prone to ingrown hairs, though anyone can experience them.

It’s one of the reasons why people turn to laser hair removal over other methods like waxing and shaving. Because the laser destroys the follicle, there’s no new hair to grow, inwards or outwards.

How does laser treatment help with Ingrown Hairs?

At LaserHQ, we use state of the art lasers to make the process as effective and convenient as possible. Treatment typically requires multiple sessions because each hair is in a different growth phase, but after six or seven sessions spaced several weeks apart, you’ll notice that your skin will be much smoother in the area, and ingrown hairs will be a thing of the past – or greatly reduced.

The treatment works on most skin tones and hair types, though results – and the number of sessions required – vary depending on your individual hair and skin. We’ll put you in the picture during your consultation, where we’ll examine the affected areas and talk about your hair removal history so we can create an effective treatment plan. While laser treatment can’t guarantee you’ll never have another ingrown hair, it can greatly reduce their frequency and severity, giving you noticeable relief.

There are three stages of hair growth and at any one time only 30% of the hairs are visible on the skin surface the rest are in a dormant state, this is why you will need multiple sessions.
Following your FREE consultation and patch test, you will need to wait at least 48 hours, before your commence with your first treatment. This is for insurance purposes and to check you have no reactions to the laser.
We recommend that most people will need an average of 8-12 treatments every 4/10 weeks (area depending) to kill the hair follicles beneath the skin and prevent future growth. Some people will require more sessions if any future hormonal changes result in new growth. Yearly top ups may also be required 1/2 sessions, to keep any stray hairs at bay. The laser can only treat hairs that are in the growing phase or visible on the skin surface, as a result, multiple treatments are required to treat all hair in the skin.
At your consultation, we will always ask if you are taking any medication. If so, we would always advise that you check with your GP first, if you are safe for the treatment. Some medications can cause light sensitive reactions, for which this treatment would be unsuitable.
You can leave 4/8 weeks between sessions, depending on the area and how many treatments you have had. Our therapists will create a personal treatment plan for you at your consultation, prior to any treatments.
