Acne Scars

Acne scars form when acne damages the skin’s deeper layers, which affects how it heals. They can appear as pits, bumps or areas of discolouration. The most common types include “ice pick” scars (deep, narrow pits), “boxcar” scars (wider depressions with defined edges), and “rolling”  (wave-like) scars. How your skin scars depends on the severity of the acne as well as your genetics, and unfortunately, picking and squeezing spots can also make them worse.

You might have long-lasting acne scars from teenage breakouts or adult acne that’s long since cleared. Either way, the scars probably affect how you feel about your skin. Even when the acne itself is under control, the scarring can remain, and there’s only so much you can do with makeup if you want to cover it up.

How does laser treatment help with acne scars?

At LaserHQ, we use various laser treatments to help reduce acne scarring. The laser delivers a measured amount of energy beneath the skin’s surface, and this encourages your body to build new, healthy tissue and hopefully smooth out the scars. This can help soften scars, even out skin texture and improve overall skin tone.

Different laser types target different scar depths and severities, so during your consultation, we’ll choose the most appropriate treatment for your specific scarring. Skin types and tones, and how your skin normally heals, will also be taken into account. You’ll probably need multiple sessions to continually encourage your skin to build new collagen after a period of healing, so a complete treatment will normally take several months.

While laser therapy can greatly improve acne scarring, complete removal isn’t always possible. We consider it an important part of our job to give you realistic expectations about the potential results before you decide whether to start your treatment.
